Overview:

Hakuna Matata Beach Lodge is a delightful owner-run lodge nestled in the grounds of the beautiful and secluded Chuini Palace Ruins, offering guests a most charming and unique stay on the west coast.

'Hakuna Matata' in Swahili means 'no worries' and unsurprisingly, the lodge has an ethos to match. As soon as you arrive you are greeted by the owners Rose and Fritz with a welcome smile and a cool refreshing drink, before being given a brief introduction to the area and shown to your bungalow.
The lodge is comprised of just 13 comfortable bungalows in various categories and one villa, all with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. There is a small spa and a 3 tiered swimming pool that is a renovation of the old sultan's palace bath and aquaduct system. In the distance out to sea, you can see Chapwani Island and Changuu Island, which used to be a prison but is now home to a giant tortoise conservation project and well worth a visit.

Room Descriptions

Hakuna Matata has 13 bungalows and 1 villa. Each bungalow is en-suite and offers high levels of comfort. They are all tastefully decorated and furnished in an African style. Each bungalow is equipped with Air conditioning and ceiling fan, hot and cold water, a mosquito net, hair dryer, towels, beach towels and basket, plus a mobile phone and room service as standard.

Comfort Bungalow

There are 6 comfort bungalows which comprise a large living/bedroom area with a king size bed, a large shower / dressing room and a private sea view terrace.

Standard twin

These rooms have a separate living room with an additional single bed and a smaller shower room, plus the additional sea view terrace.

Luxury Bungalow

The luxury bungalows are even more spacious. They have a king size bed and an additional single bed which is suitable for sleeping a third person or taking an afternoon nap by accident. Like the other bungalows, there is a sea view terrace for those glorious sundowners.

Executive suite

There are 2 Executive suites. They both have a bedroom with king size bed, shower room and a separate living room that lets in lots of light and has great views.

Honey moon suite

The honeymoon suite is called "Kilwa" and this is the lodge's flagship bungalow. There is a shower room, separate toilet, large bedroom / living area with king size beg and a fabulous sea front balcony with a bath tub that is built into a magnificent almond tree.

Villa Zanzibar

The Villa Zanzibar is an even larger affair with 2 ensuite bedrooms for complete privacy and a large living space furnished with comfortable sofas and a terrace that is built on the cliff over the ocean. There is a staircase which leads to a studio area designed to maximise the sunlight and offer outstanding views of the Indian Ocean and Stone Town in the distance.

Another lovely feature of the lodge is the open air cinema, which is set up on the old assembly place in the ruins. Here guests can enjoy a film or a concert with other guests or on their own.
