Fumba beach lodge

More info

Fumba Beach Lodge is one of Zanzibar’s original lodges and for many years has been offering a unique experience to nature loving international travellers.

Hotel name:

Address:
Fumba, Zanzibar

Over View:

Fumba Beach Lodge was built with the local community and have remained an integral part of Fumba Village life. The size and style of the lodge is unsurpassed elsewhere on the island. You can dine on the beach, a private jetty, in the restaurant, poolside, bar side, in room/suite – you choose - nothing is too much trouble for the dedicated staff. They have suites to the east of the public areas, all offering oceanfront detached accommodation with private access to the beach. Then across the lodge to the east of the public areas, sea view deluxe rooms offer further accommodation, perfect for families as there are some adjoining rooms and each is light, spacious and just metres from the beach.
Fumba Beach Lodge has a strong identity of style and traditional Zanzibari design that, like sister Moivaro property Unguja, focuses primarily on the natural environment and creating an experience that leaves you feeling rejuvenated from head to toe, inside and out. This lodge has a spa that features a hot tub built on a wooden platform at tree top height and open to the elements. Its charming rustic and holistic approach to pampering is again heavily influenced by Swahili Culture and the natural environment.

Room Descriptions

Exposed wooden beams inside and traditional thatched Makuti roofs above form the structure of the buildings, whitewashed and generously spaced throughout the gardens and beach front. The bright patchwork colour block bedspreads and scatter cushions add a fun and engaging blast of colour. All rooms and suites feature king size beds, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms and ocean views. Large wooden doors open the rooms to the outside terrace and ocean beyond.

DELUXE ROOMS

20 Deluxe Rooms are built in single stories with two rooms per bungalow, are some interconnecting for families.

BAOBAB SUITE

Two Baobab Suites are built around an ancient baobab tree and feature bathrooms completely open to the elements. They feature direct beach access and wonderful decked areas for private bathing and relaxation. As with the Luxury Suites, these are very private though the two Baobab Suites do share a tree! (All be it a very large one and you are in no way overlooked.)

LUXURY SUITE

Four Luxury Suites have huge bedrooms similar to the Deluxe Rooms and bathrooms nearly the same size again. They feature a large sunken bath with wooden shuttered windows opening onto the seascape and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired outdoor shower to the rear of the bathroom. The suites have large outdoor spaces to the front of the bungalows with a terrace, large hammock and decking down to the beach. There is also an additional seating area in the roof terrace. The Luxury Suites are detached bungalows and have a very private, secluded feeling.

Resort Services & Facilities

The kitchens at Fumba have the best ingredients in Zanzibar as the soils of the peninsula are the richest of the Island. Fumba has its very own vegetable gardens which are home to succulent fruit and vegetables used in cooking alongside the fishermen’s daily catches. Many years ago, local women educated the kitchen’s team in the use and respect of traditional Swahili cooking methods, herbs and spices. This knowledge has been nurtured and developed with Mediterranean twists to create high concept dishes. Dishes are presented simply allowing the ingredients do all the talking. A well-stocked bar alongside a sumptuous kitchen results in serious guest satisfaction!

The Baobab Spa offers Swedish, therapeutic, aromatherapy and Zanzibari scrubs and massage. Traditionally infused oils using the islands famous spices scent the spa. There are massage tables outdoors and in, with a beautiful tree top hot tub and treatment packages for men and women alike. Moonlit bathing or sun downers with your beloved – the spa can arrange private use of the facilities at any time of the day.

Blue World Dive Centre offers onsite training and certificates for beginners through to advanced divers. All equipment is modern, regularly serviced and available to hire. There is a Bauer Certified compressor and dive sites are from 25 minutes by boat. The team at Blue World comprises of local Seamen, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Instructor and Dive master.

For those who prefer to snorkel or sail the seas, Fumba has traditional dhows for exploring reefs and coral islands for picnics, swimming and snorkeling. Kayaks and windsurfs are available to hire. Fishing trips can also be arranged for all to enjoy.

Community & Conservation

Fumba is more involved with their local village than any other lodge in Zanzibar. As the villagers helped find the location for the lodge, they were naturally a part of the project from the inception to this very day. Fumba supports the local schools - from nursery through to secondary school age. They also support local businesses and their own team at the lodge who are given in house training and encouraged to develop their education. Fumba’s guests are welcomed as they stroll through the village or they can be taken on tour by requesting a guide from reception. The villagers and staff/guests have regular football matches and an annual regatta to bring the whole community of guests, lodge workers and villagers together for a fun day sailing. The kitchen gardens and large grounds keep staff busy with tending to the land, all of which benefit the conservation of this area and community living here.

Kasha Boutique

More info

Chic and minimalistic using the land to create a seamless blend from resort to ocean.

Hotel name:
Kasha Boutique

Address:
Matemwe, Zanzibar

Website:
www.kasha-zanzibar.com

Overview:

Kasha Boutique Hotel is built on a short coral cliff and has 11 luxury villas of beauty and absolute serenity. Kasha is blessed with an amazing view over the lagoon of the Mnemba Atoll coral reef. The spacious Swahili-Arabic style villas are a luxurious experience, each with a private Baraza outdoor lounge and own splash pool with sun terrace. The sounds of the light breezes blowing over the untouched landscape, together with the Indian Ocean waves lapping gently against the coral barrier reef will soothe away any burdens of day-to-day life.

Whilst similar style properties are found on the island, none has the mix of traditional style thatched Makuti bungalows with the mod cons many travellers prefer to have access too – mainly the AC and television for the cool siesta and afternoon movie that is a luxury of holidays and not everyday life. Kasha villas are amongst the best on the island for space, architecture and comforts but the crowning glory of this lodge is the views out to Mnemba Island. The beach stretches out for miles at low tide and rather than the picture perfect white sandy beaches of the south east coast, this landscape is much more interesting. As the sea recedes, coral patches and small rock pools are revealed. Locals form the village at Matemwe come and collect food, spending hours working the beach just like their ancestors before them.

At high tide, you can walk from the front of the infinity pool down steps directly into the ocean to swim and snorkel the crystal clear waters. Mnemba Island lies out in the distance and traditional dhow boats can take you to dive and snorkel the reefs at Mnemba, though the island itself is private.

Kasha is cool, calm and collected. The design is chic and minimalistic using the flatness of the land to create a seamless blend from sand and rock to gardens and the ocean beyond. The public areas are vast open spaces accented with draped fabrics and traditional carved furniture. Kasha is the perfect anecdote to urban living.

Rooms:

Each fully Air Conditioned Villa at Kasha is set within the gardens facing the ocean with 5 front row and 6 second row villas. None of the villas have direct beach access. The beach is instead accessed from steps beside the infinity pool, central and ocean front to the resort. The height and space within each villa is unmatched on the island. The stonewashed light terracotta and burnt cream Niru ( plaster ) bring the interior and exterior of the villas together, with an earthen feel that is offset with soft furnishings in whites, browns and reds. Crisp white linens adorn the large beds draped romantically with soft fabric canopies, giving the illusion of four poster beds and functioning as mosquito nets at night.

Beautifully fragranced toiletries, soft dressing gowns and bathroom linen offer guests luxurious room amenities, fitting for the size and grandness of the bathrooms with the walk in showers and large baths with ocean views.
The lounge area has a sofa, tea and coffee making facilities and flat screen television with a DVD player. The outdoor space has a secondary lounge and private plunge pool with privacy ensured by large fabric drapes hung from the frame of the makuti thatched roofs. All the villas have stunning views of the Ocean. The front row villas offer uninterrupted panoramas whilst the second row do overlook the first.

Service & Facilities

The Sama Restaurant and Sheesha Bar serves mainly African dishes using locally farmed produce, Zanzibar’s world famous spices and ‘catch of the day’ fish straight from the Indian Ocean to the plate. Alongside the seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes are served to guests and any dietary requirements are catered for.

Kasha Boutique also offers the following:

  • The Lala Spa offers body scrubs, facials, massages and holistic treatments using locally infused oils such as Langi Langi and Lemon grass.
  • The Infinity pool is the perfect place to relax and take a drink from the pool bar.
  • Diving and snorkelling trips are arranged through the hotel reception, as are excursions throughout the island. Kasha works with One Ocean dive centre in Matemwe.

Community Projects

Kasha works with the local community by stocking the hotel kitchens with produce from the local village and farms. The fishermen of Matemwe have benefitted hugely from tourism on the east coast and local villagers are given priority to be trained and employed at the hotel.

The management of Kasha can arrange for you to attend local weddings and celebrations giving you an insight to local culture and traditions.
