Fumba Beach Lodge was built with the local community and
have remained an integral part of Fumba Village life. The size and style of the
lodge is unsurpassed elsewhere on the island. You can dine on the beach, a
private jetty, in the restaurant, poolside, bar side, in room/suite – you
choose - nothing is too much trouble for the dedicated staff. They have suites
to the east of the public areas, all offering oceanfront detached accommodation
with private access to the beach. Then across the lodge to the east of the
public areas, sea view deluxe rooms offer further accommodation, perfect for
families as there are some adjoining rooms and each is light, spacious and just
metres from the beach.
Fumba Beach Lodge has a strong identity of style and
traditional Zanzibari design that, like sister Moivaro property Unguja, focuses
primarily on the natural environment and creating an experience that leaves you
feeling rejuvenated from head to toe, inside and out. This lodge has a spa that
features a hot tub built on a wooden platform at tree top height and open to
the elements. Its charming rustic and holistic approach to pampering is again
heavily influenced by Swahili Culture and the natural environment.
Room
Descriptions
Exposed
wooden beams inside and traditional thatched Makuti roofs above form the
structure of the buildings, whitewashed and generously spaced throughout the
gardens and beach front. The bright patchwork colour block bedspreads and
scatter cushions add a fun and engaging blast of colour. All rooms and suites
feature king size beds, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms and ocean views. Large
wooden doors open the rooms to the outside terrace and ocean beyond.
DELUXE ROOMS
20 Deluxe
Rooms are built in single stories with two rooms per bungalow, are some
interconnecting for families.
BAOBAB SUITE
Two Baobab
Suites are built around an ancient baobab tree and feature bathrooms completely
open to the elements. They feature direct beach access and wonderful decked
areas for private bathing and relaxation. As with the Luxury Suites, these are
very private though the two Baobab Suites do share a tree! (All be it a very
large one and you are in no way overlooked.)
LUXURY SUITE
Four Luxury
Suites have huge bedrooms similar to the Deluxe Rooms and bathrooms nearly the
same size again. They feature a large sunken bath with wooden shuttered windows
opening onto the seascape and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired outdoor shower to
the rear of the bathroom. The suites have large outdoor spaces to the front of
the bungalows with a terrace, large hammock and decking down to the beach.
There is also an additional seating area in the roof terrace. The Luxury Suites
are detached bungalows and have a very private, secluded feeling.
Resort
Services & Facilities
The kitchens
at Fumba have the best ingredients in Zanzibar as the soils of the peninsula
are the richest of the Island. Fumba has its very own vegetable gardens which
are home to succulent fruit and vegetables used in cooking alongside the
fishermen’s daily catches. Many years ago, local women educated the kitchen’s
team in the use and respect of traditional Swahili cooking methods, herbs and
spices. This knowledge has been nurtured and developed with Mediterranean
twists to create high concept dishes. Dishes are presented simply allowing the
ingredients do all the talking. A well-stocked bar alongside a sumptuous
kitchen results in serious guest satisfaction!
The Baobab
Spa offers Swedish, therapeutic, aromatherapy and Zanzibari scrubs and massage.
Traditionally infused oils using the islands famous spices scent the spa. There
are massage tables outdoors and in, with a beautiful tree top hot tub and
treatment packages for men and women alike. Moonlit bathing or sun downers with
your beloved – the spa can arrange private use of the facilities at any time of
the day.
Blue World
Dive Centre offers onsite training and certificates for beginners through to
advanced divers. All equipment is modern, regularly serviced and available to
hire. There is a Bauer Certified compressor and dive sites are from 25 minutes
by boat. The team at Blue World comprises of local Seamen, a PADI Master Scuba
Diver Instructor and Dive master.
For those who
prefer to snorkel or sail the seas, Fumba has traditional dhows for exploring
reefs and coral islands for picnics, swimming and snorkeling. Kayaks and
windsurfs are available to hire. Fishing trips can also be arranged for all to
enjoy.
Community
& Conservation
Fumba is
more involved with their local village than any other lodge in Zanzibar. As the
villagers helped find the location for the lodge, they were naturally a part of
the project from the inception to this very day. Fumba supports the local
schools - from nursery through to secondary school age. They also support local
businesses and their own team at the lodge who are given in house training and
encouraged to develop their education. Fumba’s guests are welcomed as they
stroll through the village or they can be taken on tour by requesting a guide
from reception. The villagers and staff/guests have regular football matches
and an annual regatta to bring the whole community of guests, lodge workers and
villagers together for a fun day sailing. The kitchen gardens and large grounds
keep staff busy with tending to the land, all of which benefit the conservation
of this area and community living here.
