Overview:

Matemwe beach is one of Zanzibar's most peaceful and idyllic on the whole island. Perched upon a short coral cliff, Matemwe Lodge embodies the tropical island paradise experience in many ways. Established for twenty years, the lodge is adept at offering its guests the very best in warm personal service and sumptuous cuisine - fresh seafood being the speciality. Matemwe is located adjacent to Mnemba Atoll, a beautiful small circular coral reef and the most spectacular dive spot in the whole archipelago.

The lodge's twelve spacious individual chalets are perched upon a short coral rock overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter north-east coast of Zanzibar. Matemwe's peaceful location and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal place to unwind. Matemwe Lodge was one of the first on the island and over the past twenty years they have perfected the art of hospitality. The lodge is adjacent to one of the best stretches of beach on the east coast and is punctuated with quirky corners and guest areas to relax and enjoy the sun as well as the wonderful view. For more active guests there are a number of activities available. Just a short boat ride away is the stunning Mnemba Island marine park, which no stay is complete without visiting. Other activities include deep-sea fishing, visits to historic Stone Town or you can simply make the most of the secluded beach with a swim and a stroll.

Accommodation:

Matemwe Lodge has just twelve private beach chalets all overlooking the Indian Ocean. The day begins with tea and fresh coffee left for you on your private sea front verandah as the sun rises over the ocean. Each terrace is furnished with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for watching the changing turquoise colours of the ocean as the dhow boats gently glide past in the distance.

Each spacious suite is built from local materials and surrounded by lush tropical gardens.
All beds are enclosed by mosquito nets and there is a separate writing area upstairs in the loft space. Large en-suite bathrooms have both a large bathtub and walk-in shower.

Facilities and Activities:

Matemwe Lodge has a fabulous open-air restaurant that sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach below. The restaurant is well known accross the island for its excellent African and European fusion cuisine. Seafood is the house speciality, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. A massage always comes highly recommended, and so does a pre-dinner cocktail with your fellow guests at sundown.

Conservation Project:

Matemwe Lodge is a great example of how an up-market lodge can positively affect its surroundings. The lodge has provided drinking water for the neighbouring fishing village, Kigomani, and has also supported the supply of electricity. Matemwe has assisted in financing a school and medical clinic also setting up a scholarship for their students.
